Fun Night

So that was a pretty fun night. Director of the local art gallery came to me and asked me to volunteer at the Midsummers Eve of the Arts, this big huge "Art Auction to benefit the Gallery" thing that has like a $50 entry fee and auctions off things at averages of $300 - $3000. So pretty much I was with the silent auction crew, set things up, everyone asking me "so what do you think of how these arts are arranged on the table?" and me saying "It'd look better like this." and them going "you're right!" me not... not really knowing why all these strangers are defering to me, but thinking it's pretty cool anyway.

So the night comes around - I get there about an hour early to help finalize things, and there's about... 30 of the local resteraunts and wineries from around the whole region there - one of the resteraunt booths has a very large bbq, and there is half of a pig on it. About four wineries, and two breweries, a couple 'gourmet catering' and other sorts of places - two live band sorts of things, classical type, violins, a tuba, couple clarinets and flutes - so I'm pretty impressed.

Then 6:30 rolls around, the doors open, and a *wave* of humanity fills the place in an instant, ignoring the art for - did I mention that all the food, beer and wine is free?

So after about an hour of looking after my silent-auction tend with a couple others (there's two tents for silent auction art) I'm spelled for a break - and the food people were also wise enough to have people carrying around trays of food. There's about fifty of those fruit and vegetable snack tray things you can get from Safeway or wherever, laying on tables beside the lines - there's lineups for just about every resteraunt booth thing - and those trays are mostly being ignored.

So for the rest of the night, every time my mug of beer or glass of wine (every single person there got a free wine glass just for the heck of it, and i mean everyone) - every time my glass was empty, someone refilled it, every time my other hand was empty, it was filled with roast pork, or shrimp shishkabob, or sushi, or some indian food thing, or something else delicious.

All in all, from just the $50 cover, the gallery raised about $30000 in that single night - and about $40000 from the live and silent auctions combined. Also, the director of the museum and I got to random talking, she lamenting that the guy doing the "Ghost Tours" of the city was retiring, and mentioned that I'd have a good face to continue his work.

...

All in all, a good night.

Arts, I bring you them!

...and I'm back.

Thought about continuing the old numbering scheme, which would have meant that what here is '1b' would be '65', but I decided that'd be dishonest. This is all about seeing how many consecutive days I can upload four new art pieces each day; continuing the numbering from my last point of failure would be dishonest.

So! Now that I've gained confidence in pencil and graphite, I've moved over to pen and ink, markers, calligraphy pen and bottle of ink, and it really is a lot of fun. The tactile feedback of a knife-edge calligraphy nib vibrating against the surface of the paper as it bleeds black ink behind its path is something just not found in the smooth silken slide of soft graphite or charcoal.

1b) Crest

Small thing here, getting used to drawing with a calligraphy pen and bottle of ink, along with a few permanant black in markers of various sizes and a regular ball point pen.

2b) Thing in a Box

Thing in a box. Practicing angles, construction, lighting - my angles are off a bit, but I've sinced learned how to correct that, I've got a painting of something like this somewhere around here I'll upload later on, angles corrected.

3b) Mountain Meadow

This was fun, all of this was done with calligraphy pen, various nibs, and a bottle of ink - I smudged it in the bottom right there, the ink isn't as black as I'd like, but it flows well, and it's convenient for on-site sketching like this.

4b) Dead Tree

Big old rotten dead tree. Background was added artificially to give it a sense of scale, if I remember correctly this was in the corner of an old gravel yard. Was fun messing with the angles and perspective here, and I'm glad the flowers worked as well as they did. Drawing with various pens, markers, and ink doesn't exactly leave any room at all for erasing.

****

So, usually I'm posting this over at http://lbassett.livejournal.com/ http://lukebassett.blogspot.com/ and http://lbassett.deviantart.com/ ; it's just here this time as well to announce that it can has be arts tiem now.
Day Four went well, some fun stuff in there.

More interestingly, I've decided that, instead of spamming people with images, I'll shift my livejournal updates of my art challenge over to http://lbassett.livejournal.com , I've already got the past four days worth of updates in there. Remember to friend that one if you want regular updates!

This here will get mention of success or failure, but I'm keeping the images all over there. Well, also http://lukebassett.blogspot.com/ and http://lbassett.deviantart.com/ of course, but livejournal is a different bunch of people.

Okay, gonna see if I can make this a regular event from here on out - 4 updates a day, or you get to kick my ass.

Going to be pulling out some random stuff from the past little while, mixing in some new stuff occasionally. If major webcomic people can update three times a week, I can sure as hell update four times a day. (hubris? only if I fail!)

Also you know what? Imma do this all serious-like. Levelling this up to fancy-type 'sketch-blog' over at http://lukebassett.blogspot.com/

It ain't no wordpress, but I gotta start somewhere. Where is this motivation coming from? Whatever the source, it has a friendly tip-of-the-hat from me lego-d together with my genuine gratitude. That's not a combination of thanks that I make just casually.
